Which Way to Transfer Files Is the Safest One?

There are plenty of ways to transfer files for various purposes, both personal and professional. However, as soon as you decide to put up your files for download, you’re introducing several cybersecurity risks that you may not have thought about. With that in mind, what are your options when it comes to file transfer online?

1. Snapchat

The popular chat program comes with an option to send photos that self-destruct after a set period of time. However, this is only true in theory. In practice, the recipient might as well take a screenshot of the photo before it self-destructs. While the app does notify you about it, it’s not of any help if you want to use the feature as it was intended. Furthermore, there is a copy of the image that’s stored on Snapchat’s servers for archival purposes. So whenever you’re using Snapchat, you need to be aware of these things and decide whether you’re comfortable with them or not.
2. pCloud

If you don’t want to send an attachment through email, pCloud is a great way to get the job done. Some email providers like Gmail limit the total size of attachments per email to 20 MB, which is sometimes not enough to transfer everything you’d like in one go. With pCloud, there are no known limitations. It’s a good thing that the platform is accessible from any operating system of your choice. Now, for the drawback; there is no encryption unless you purchase a $4.99 monthly subscription. But either way, the files you upload automatically self-destruct after a certain period of time, so there’s no need to babysit them.
3. Email

Ah, the good old email. It’s been around for decades, and everyone knows how to use it. It allows you to send text messages and attach files for the recipient to see. There’s just one problem; the contents may get intercepted on the way if you’re not careful enough. If you’re connecting to the internet through a risky hotspot, this is exactly what might happen. There are multiple ways on how to deal with the problem. The first option is to use a VPN (a virtual private network). If you do, no one will be able to snoop on the files and messages you exchange with another person because all the traffic you send or receive will be routed through an encrypted tunnel. The second option is to encrypt the attachments themselves. This, however, does not protect the content of the messages. Also, you’ll need to find a way to get the password to the recipient separately.
4. OTR

Linux users are more than aware of Pidgin, a messaging platform that often comes pre-installed on the OS. It’s cross-platform too, so it’s easy to chat with someone who’s using a different OS. The best part about it is OTR (off the record) messaging feature. It encrypts all the messages that get sent from your machine, so you don’t have to worry about man-in-the-middle attacks. But again, if messing with extra plugins is not your cup of tea, you can also choose to always use a VPN while you’re chatting online, which is another great way of making sure that no one is intercepting your messages.
5. SFTP

Are you an old-school type who loves to fiddle around with servers? Then SFTP is another option in your arsenal. It’s like FTP, but with an extra bit of security added on top of it. Still, to utilize it for file transfer, you’ll need a server first. Getting one just for that purpose and leaving it sitting is probably a waste of your resources, not to mention the fact it requires a little bit of technical knowledge to set up. But if you already have a server available, you might as well utilize it for sending files. Obviously, the risk here is that anyone can access the files you uploaded as long as they know the exact URL. Moreover, if hackers get inside your hosting account, they will obtain access to everything you’re storing there.Sponsor ads:

In the end, no way of transferring the files online is 100% secure. But if you learn the risks associated with each of the options, you can mitigate them and choose a method of transfer that works best for the situation at hand.

iFixit’s 2019 MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals Minor Changes to Butterfly Keyboard Material

Earlier this week, Apple announced a surprised 2019 MacBook Pro refresh with the focus primarily being on faster 6-core and 8-core Intel processors. There was another smaller change that Apple did not even talk about in its press release — a more reliable butterfly keyboard.

Apple said that it is using newer materials for the butterfly keyboard on the 2019 MacBook Pro which should make it more reliable in nature.

A teardown from iFixit has now revealed what underlying changes Apple has made to its butterfly keyboard. The design of the dome switch has been updated and there is a new clearer material for the keyboard cover switch. The older one was semi-opaque, “somewhat tacky, and feels like silicone.” The new material is “clearer and smooth to the touch.” Based on an FITR analysis, the new material is nylon while the older material was a complex polymer.

The keyboard dome switch has also been changed slightly. Apple is seemingly “using a revised heat treatment, or alloy, or possibly both.” iFixit is unable to determine the exact changes with their current equipment and it requires a deeper analysis.

iFixit does attribute some of the reliability issues with the butterfly keyboard to the metal switches.

If anything changes about the dome—if it’s cracked or deformed—the key may behave erratically. Likewise, if the prongs break or bend, the key stops working.

Ultimately, Apple seems to have made some minor changes to the materials it is using to make the butterfly keyboard on the 2019 MacBook Pro. It is unclear if these changes will also be applicable on the replacement 2018 and older MacBook models which use the butterfly keyboard.

The bigger issue, however, is that just like previous MacBook Pro models, the 2019 MacBook Pro requires replacing one entire half of the laptop instead of just the keyboard if anything goes wrong with it. No wonder then that the 2019 MacBook Pro has received a measly repairability score of 1 out 10.
We Want to Hear From You

Are you willing to buy the 2019 MacBook Pro despite the unreliable history of butterfly keyboards? Or are you willing to wait and watch as to how the new butterfly keyboard holds up in terms of reliability before making a decision?

Pwn20wnd Team Working on Major Update for Unc0ver Jailbreak for iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2

Ever since the Electra team released Chimera jailbreak for iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2devices, the @Pwn20wnd team has kept quiet. Today, the team has posted an update informing its followers that they are working on a major update for Unc0ver jailbreak and Cydia backend to make it more stable than before.

This is particularly important since Chimera jailbreak offers a more stable and bug-free experience to users which is why many have been preferring it over Unc0ver.

Pwn20wnd

@Pwn20wnd

We have been working on major updates for both unc0ver and Cydia’s backend, to make them incredibly stable, bug-free and fast like never before.

These updates are finally almost done and will soon be released to public :-).

There’s no word from the @pwn20wnd team as to whether the update will also add jailbreaking support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and other A12 Bionic devices running iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2. Apart from the stability issues, that’s one major disadvantage of Unc0ver jailbreak when compared to Chimera which supports jailbreaking all A12 Bionic devices running iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2.

If you have already used Unc0ver to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad but are frustrated with the stability issues, this news might want to make you hold off from switching to Chimera. Ultimately, competition is a good thing as without the release of Chimera jailbreak, the @pwn20wnd team might have taken a wee bit longer to work on improving the overall stability of Unc0ver jailbreak.

Are you looking forward to this update for Unc0ver jailbreak? Or is it already working smoothly for you?

Disney Picks up Full Control of Hulu

The juggernaut that is Disney is launching its own streaming service soon. Disney+ will launch later this year and cost only $7 per month. But while Disney+ will host content from brands like Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and more, it won’t be the right platform for all content. Which is where Hulu comes in.

Disney recently picked up a majority position for Hulu not too long ago. This meant it could launch even more content on the platform, including animated series based on Marvel characters like Howard the Duck, MODOK, and Ghost Rider, among others. But now Disney has negotiated a deal with Comcast, which sees Disney pick up full control of Hulu beginning today.

This is part of what’s known as a “put/call” deal. This means that while Disney is getting full control of Hulu today, that big things can still happen in the future. Specifically, this deal makes it possible for either Disney or Comcast to force a sale of Comcast’s remaining shares in Hulu in late 2024. Currently, Comcast still holds a 33 percent stake in Hulu.

Now, nothing is changing for NBCUniversal content (which is owned by Comcast) right away. For now, NBCUniversal’s content, including live shows, will still be hosted on Hulu and Hulu Live TV. That will change in late 2024, though, as Comcast will have the option of pulling that content and launching it on its own upcoming streaming service. NBCUniversal’s own streaming service was announced back in January of this year.

One caveat: Starting in one year, Comcast can actually start putting its owned content on the upcoming streaming service, which will reduce the license fee that Hulu has to pay.

What happens in 2024 will be the real kicker for Hulu (and Disney). We already know of several different Disney-owned properties that are coming to Hulu in the near future, and that will likely only continue as Disney looks to expand beyond what it can share on Disney+. Disney sees Hulu as a way to launch more adult-oriented content. Think Netflix’s Marvel series, Daredevil or Jessica Jones. Which is why Howard the Duck won’t be available on Disney+.

But if Comcast pulls all of its NBCUniversal content from Hulu in favor of its own platform in 2024, will Hulu still be a viable option for the millions of subscribers out there? It almost makes sense for Disney to try and keep third-party content on the platform. But of course, the streaming platform wars are in full swing, and we’re all faced with the prospects of having to subscribe to every single broadcaster and publisher under the moon to watch the shows and movies we want.
